Vanitas Series

Derived from the Latin word for “Vanity," Vanitas is an exploration inspired by the 17th century Baroque genre containing symbols of death or change as a reminder of their inevitability. The term originally comes from the opening lines of the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible: ‘Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities, all is vanity.’ The fate of all things entails a splendor for a moment in time that is bound to its eventual moving on. The artist references Monet’s “Water Lilies” which embody the passing of time and transparency of water as a metaphor for the layered circumstances and attributes of the times.
