Wilpers' was inspired by the examination of the gold backgrounds in medieval painting. There, gold is not used in the spatial sense, but as the splendor of the heavenly world, as if it were the “Eternal Horizon“. The picture carriers are massive wooden panels, whose volume increases the presence of the works. Brittleness and injuries of the picture ground create contextual tension to the shine of the gold. Applied glass drops, rock crystals and gilded seeds collect and reflect light. Each of the seeds represents a promise that spans an entire world.
