Artist Note

Baker’s paintings include symbology for life, death and resurrection. Believing that human beings connect to the landscape through their senses, she is more interested in what is felt than what is literal.

“I Remember” depicts a cedar tree growing within a desert, a climate that is seen as challenging, dead or baren with withering trees but will still bring forth leaves. The cedar is illuminated by gold leaf to highlight the value and eternal life found in the divine light. It is in this setting that Baker finds hope in the darkness.

She recalls, as the Artist/missionary Lilias Trotter once wrote, "Believe in the dark the things you have learned in the light."
